And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead | Mannheim @ Alte Feuerwache | 28.08.2007

Trail Of Dead used to be one hell of a live act.

The avid Trail of Dead concert-goers were used to the band moving up and down in homogeneous fashion. Blood, sweat and power probably best described the bands' early years. Well, in 2007 Trail of Dead is more like a stadium rock band getting used to more and more bigger stages incorporating its fashion, gestures and lifestyle - leaving the Deathpath behind. Serious indie rock is what the band used to write in capital letters back in 2005 when I cought them on their "World's Apart" album support tour. Back then, it felt like the band left his hardcore years completely behind by only playing one older song. Completely burnt out from countless 6 months touring without any interruption, you could experience a band lacking power and ambition only being a poor copy of themselves. Two years later, the band was slightly better - at least they tried to catch up to what they once left behind - in the end, however, failed terribly. At least their setlist seemed to have changed. Tons of older material - hell, even their very first song was presented to an audience that probably took on them after their indie smash hit in 2004. Anyway, the band is still able to play some great great songs they are just not very good at it performing them on stage. Imagine Mogwai playing paralyzed on stage? What a misfit. On top the soundman should have been stoned by mixing Keeley's voice to cookie monster level and by destroying any valid evidence this band actually plays distorted guitars - very sad. But what we found to be extremely weird was the fact that no matter how unambitioned the band was on stage (compared to their early years), we actually enjoyed closing our eyes and listening to some of the greatest material written in modern rock music. And we could even stand the band's three song encore as usually the end should be the end. Period. So after the horrors of the supporting acts we got to listen to 1,5 hours of a softer and grown older Texan powerhouse where the band name Trail Of Dead certainly fits the songs - sadly not their perfomance on stage anymore. But hell, we still appreciate they played so many old songs and we keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to see a show like 2000/2001 again. I am confident.
