The return of the originators
As we were quite excited to see one of the few remaining Ska/ Rocksteady/ Reggae originators that night, so we arrived early at the venue, so we don´t miss a single tone. Though there are only a few members of the original line-up left, expectations were high. Firt we were surprised how little people showed up wanting to see a legend like the Skatalites. Seems like a lot of people hanging around at Dancehall Reggae parties nowadays don´t care much ab out the roots of this music anymore. In addition the audience has changed a lot, compared to the last Ska concert I was (which was years ago…). While the venues back then were packed with Skinheads, nowadays the crowd is very diverse. Not a bad thing, though. After having spend some time watching the exhibition, that was taking place at the venue, Skatalites hit the stage. With a countdown to freedom they started a party, that should last for over an hour. Nearly all of the members had their fun on stage and I was really surprised about the good condition the old guys were in. Without a pause they played one classic after the other, accompanied by some songs of their quite good new album. After a while Doreen Shaffer joined the guys on stage, helping them out with her beautiful voice! Even Lester Sterling was smiling throughout her set from time to time! Overall the Skatalites are still among the best bands, when it comes down to traditional Ska. We all hope the will not retire too early and will stay healthy for a long time coming.
