Many break-ups in the Coalition Roster | 29.12.2003

Tear It Up and Wolves broke/will break up.

Coalition Records recording artist Tear It Up have decided to quit being together as a band. This New Jersey hardcore outfit was one of the greatest bands around in contemporary hardcore and will be greatly missed. All band members, however have other band projects: Matt plays in The Rites and Cut The Shit, Ryan and Jon have been rumoured to play in a stonerrock band called Sea Creature, whereas Andy is in a new band called Forward To Death.

In other news, The Wolves (featuring former Orchid members) who are currently touring Europe will break up after this tour. The band will return home a day earlier and will not finish their tour with Transistor Transistor as originally planned.

New squat in Mannheim/Germany | 28.12.2003

Well kind of local news, but important nonetheless!

In the evening hours of Dec 25th the house of the former ASH company, located in Mannheim- Jungbusch (Verbindungskanal, Linkes Ufer 20) got squatted. The aim of the action is to demonstrate against the restructuring of the quarter "Jungbusch" and the social exclusion of deprived living in this quarter.
So far there has been a party in the squat, which is now besieged by the cops, and today a rally happened. Hopefully the squatters will get the support they need, so spread the word and turn words into action!

After quite some time it seems as it's for real now. 7 seconds recorded a new album.

On their website, Kevin posted a journal of the recording process. Drum, bass and guitar tracks for 17 songs have been recorded so far. Vocals will be done soon. I am eager to hear this stuff, honestly.

Just check the link, if you're interested in the whole story ...

How German VIVA TV sells their clip rotation. | 08.12.2003

According to German magazine, Der Spiegel, VIVA TV sold their clip rotation to Vivendi/Universal.

When it comes to independent music journalism, most major media outlets had to face accusations of payola in the past. It is obvious that the music media trades a certain exposure when there is to receive ad-dollars in return - a common practice in the hard battle to climb up the billboard charts.
However, as German magazine Der Spiegel recently uncovered, there's more to this. In times of declining marketing budgets music television has to find new ways to refinance. The concept the well enlighted music consumer had in mind did not quite come into effect: In a weekly meeting, many music journalists sit together and discuss what they will air in the upcoming days - so the theory. VIVA TV's CEO Gorny was obviously walking a different path. In a meeting with the heads of Universal, they arranged that VIVA will play all of their videos for 18.000 euros /video. To ensure the success of this "barter-deal" Universal also agreed to pay VIVA .20 cents per album sold.
So now it is official. When we can buy the contents of a program it surely marks the end music distribution the way we once thought of it. So does this sound shocking to you? I don't think so. It solely proves what was once discussed behind closed doors. Sad.
