The Gimmes rocked Hollywood
For those who do not know, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a punk rock cover band. The lineup includes Spike Slauson on vocals, Fat Mike on bass, Joey Cape on guitar, Chris Shifflet on guitar and Dave Raun on the drums.
This was the last Gimmes show on their short U.S. west coast tour. I was expecting the set to be filled with mostly new songs of their latest album, "Love Their Country." However, their lengthy set consisted of songs from "Are a Drag," "Have a ball," "Take a Break" and "Ruin Johnny's Bar Mitzvah," The crowd was a nice mix of the young and the old. The opening band was Eight Fingers Down. I missed most of their set because I was talking to Joey outside. He said that Lagwagon plans on touring Europe in April.
The Gimmes started their set around 9:20pm (21:20) and ended 11:00pm (23:00). The band was dressed up in all country western outfits with Spike sporting some nice sun glasses. Throughout the set Fat Mike kept teasing Joey about how short he was. He also called him a t-rex. Anyways, the set list included the Dixie Chicks hit, "Goodbye Earl." Johnny Cash's "Ghostriders in the Sky," R-Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" and many other great songs. Everytime I see the Gimmes they continue to make me laugh. For aging punk rockers, they sounded on key for most of the set and Spike's vocals were dead on. It is always fun watching the Gimmes play. They make stupid jokes on stage, drink beer as if it was water and the crowd seemed to enjoy it as well.
