Yo La Tengo, Crashing Dreams | Karlstorbahnhof / Heidelberg | 24.11.2006 |

Being a band, the accompanies me for years now, I was quite excited to see Yo La Tengo live finally.
Everytime they were around previously, I missed their shows for several reasons. So this time I marked the date of their appearance in my calendar, to make sure to be at the Karlstorbahnhof in Heidelberg.
As I arrived, the kind of local support “Crashing Dreams” were already playing. This three piece matched quite well to stuff coming ahead later, but didn´t reach the brilliance of Yo La Tengo. Simple and stripped down Indierock, that sounded a little bit dated and could have been released by Sub Pop in the early 90s (sadly without reaching their “quality standard”…). So they were ok, but nothing more or less.
As the main room of the venue was already crowded and the air was really thick, I didn´t attend Crashing Dreams any longer and went in the front room, where I met the nice guys of Mannheim´s rock sensation Lookout Rock. Hanging around with them, the night turned out fun (can´t remember how many silly reasons they thought off, that could someone prevent from attending the support band…). So time went by quickly and it was time for Yo La Tengo. I didn´t expect, that they´re still as well known, so I was quite surprised, that the venue got even more crowded. Another thing, that surprised me, was that it seemed like they got a roadie for every little thing of work that was to do. After their roadies passed them some towels and a guitar, they finally started out. At first the sound wasn´t that great and there were some timing problems within the band. But as time passed by, they got more routined from song to song. Playing songs from most of their albums, the night offered a variety of moods and a lot of changes of instruments, but somehow they weren´t able to light my fire. I missed the passion- everything sounded a little bit too routined and some songs just contained a little bit too much guitar wanking… So I left the venue with mixed feelings. Well, finally I made it to a Yo La Tengo show, but they were nowhere near to what I expected. Maybe my expectations just where to high…
